Guilt is something that all of us have experienced at one time or another in our lives. We all know, or think we know, what guilt is. So how do you recognize that you are suffering from guilt? The below pointers might help you to recognize if guilt forms part of your life:

  • Guilt prevents us from accomplishing our purpose in life, which is to grow spiritually.
  • Guilt prevents us from having a good relationship with other human beings.
  • Guilt causes us to punish those around us for our problems.
  • Guilt is a form of living in the past and not getting on with our life's purpose here.
  • Guilt often creates life-threatening pathologies as our bodies attract ill health.
  • Guilt causes us to continually hurt those around us, often our most loved ones, because we want to punish ourselves by their rejection. This is one of the most insidious and hurtful responses of the guilt-ridden individual.
  • Realize that by forgiving yourself for your mistakes you allow yourself to move into the future.
  • All major religions except Christianity teach that we have to make mistakes in order to learn. Mistakes are the tools which force us to learn better ways to act and respond to life.
  • Above all else, know that your mind is your gateway to freedom. What you do, what happens to you, is not important, but how you react to your experiences, including your mistakes, is the all-important thing. Claim your divine right to be what you want to be.
